Especially the S/RS models. Very pretty indeed...but...where's the ancillaries? Alternator, Power steering pump and all that? You know they must be there, but you can't see them at all.
I feel like this every time I see these bays; everything's nice neat and tucked away...but if any of it breaks, for any reason at all...well...your shit's fucking fucked, bro.

It's not much worse than a 300 ZX twin-turbo engine bay.

raise your interweb hand if you've done the timing chain tensioner gaskets on a 2.8L V6 on Audi or VW. Yes those, the ones where the cams have to be removed. Anyone? They were fun right? :]

5 Gals of KY and a shoehorn, that's how it fits in there.

Aren't those the V8s where the timing chain is on the back of the engine?

I'm getting second hand Jalop Pains over here. Oooow.

Oooooohhhh man, I thought for a moment you said 'timing belt'. Heh. Almost had a heart attack there.

You see those? You see those chains? The tensioners and guides have apparently random lifetimes. Some can go over 100k easy. Others might not last more than 50k. Enjoy :P

Ah, gotta love German engineering!
It makes transverse V6's look easy to work on!

OMG WTF, why is that one even down there for!? Audi y u du dis!?

I honestly don't know why timing gears don't make a come back.

The chains are at the back of the engine and they look like that?
Jesus you're giving me a heart attack dude.

The 5-cylinders weren't impossible to do the timing belt on. I did my 20 valve's myself with my dad. Also did the valve stem seals, some gaskets, and am redoing all the sensors on it. Audi engines didn't get impossible until recently. They're just obtuse in the older 5 cylinders.

I didn't do that, but I did change the serp belt on my A4 a while back. Cut the shit out of my knuckles. I've got to get the front clip off so I can change the coupler in the supercharger. That isn't going to be fun. I hope I can take the front off and tilt the radiator forward instead of draining the damn thing an removing it.

no sure about to A4, but the C5 A6 could be put into service mode by moving the core support forward a tad. Front bumbper has to come off is all, not too bad. Im sure you can in the A4. Next time, invite some friends over, get some beer and pizza, and make a weekend out of it. Oh and gloves :]

The A4 has a service mode too, I just didn't do it correctly. You just reminded me of this. It might make it tons easier to get the snout off the supercharger.

True story, I have a b5 S4 and its an absolute joy to work on...plenty of practice taking shit off and putting it back on. Least there's a strong community that can tell you what to do and how not to fuck up. Only reason I havent set fire to the damned thing.

A few things about the Audi 4.2 motors...
- In order to fit the engine under the hood of the B6/B7 chassis for the S4 and RS4, Audi had to put the engine in backwards, and use the more compact timing chain. How ever, all other front engine applications of the 4.2 of that generation have a timing belt, pointing towards the grille.
-I'm fairly certain the B8 RS4 and RS5 (as in the picture you have depicted) have a front mounted timing belt. Those cars have more longitudinal room in the engine bay than its predecessor. Even if they don't, it would have a revised timing chain (see below).
- Only the B6 and B7 S4 had the timing chain issue. It was fixed for the RS4 gmbh-enhanced motor, and all other uses of this motor use a belt.
